Using Community to Build a Fair Trade Business #3: Indonesia

Doing fair trade business means having respect and appreciation for everyone down the line. Today, we’re highlighting one of our talented makers from Indonesia: Supriadi!

In Indonesia, we are fortunate to collaborate with many small suppliers using fair trade best practices. But when we asked our co-founders Jess & Case about some memorable makers we work with around the world, they immediately thought of Supriadi!

“Supriadi is a maker who sticks out to me because of his positive attitude, his amazing work ethic, and his attention to detail. He has got such a happy disposition, as well as an amazing story!” – Jess, Pokoloko co-founder

Although he is happy to be a successful businessman these days, that was not always the case. In his early years, Supriadi’s career became fraught with tragedy as he lost everything in a natural disaster.

Read on to learn more about the story of our talented Balinese artisan.

Meet the Maker: Fair Trading with Supriadi

Supriadi is the owner of the operation that produces ourCozy Knit collection, which consists of cardigans, sweaters, ponchos, and more!

His experience working with textiles since 1990 makes him an experienced maker with a long history.

Supriadi's niche focuses on working with batik clothing and sarongs, as well as knitted garments.

In 1992, Supriadi married his wife Usniyah, whom he now works with together in partnership. As a family affair, Usniyah is in charge of managing the organization of the workshop, while Supriadi works as the business lead for customers.

Supriadi’s Small Scale Shop- Perfect for Fair Trading

Local to the island, Supriadi has always been proud to own shops on the streets of Bali.

As of late, though, his business has seen an uptick of customers coming in from other countries, including us here at Pokoloko! By engaging in our fair trade partnership, Supriadi is able to seek greater equity in his international trading, thereby contributing to his own sustainable development.

Supriadi’s operation is what can be consideredsmall-scale. His shop is located in a medium-size, two-story home, with the bottom floor being his workshop, and the top floor being his production space.

His operation currently runs on 3 crude machines that are basic and dated, but reliable nonetheless.

From a Bad Deal to a Fair Trade

In 1996, Supriadi had built his business to be relatively quite big.

He had at one time over 100 employees, and had built up a big customer base locally. Fiscally, he was experiencing some of his best years in business.

In 2004, after many years of success, Supriadi filled his first ever container of goods and shipped it overseas to Thailand. However, tragedy struck when it got lost in a tsunami that hit Aceh, Thailand. Losing his shipment, Supriadi went bankrupt.

In time, and with more than 30 years of experience working with textiles under his belt, Supriadi managed to build his team back up to 10 people.

Today, his business is comprised mostly of family and friends.

Fair Trade as a Helping Hand

When we ask ourselves what makes a business fair trade, ultimately it comes down to ensuring every member of our team is treated with respect and dignity. We know what it looks like to build a business from the ground up. Your experiences shape who you are personally, and with any luck you bring your whole self to the experience of “creating”. Supriadi is an artisan we are honoured to collaborate with, and we know his story is woven into every little luxury he personally handcrafts.

We are hopeful that our fair trade agreement will allow Supriadi the opportunity to continue rebuilding his legacy.
