Our friends in the community of Pucara, Ecuador are struggling due to lack of food access and rising food costs as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Pucara is a rural Indigenous village in northern Ecuador near and dear to our hearts, where we've been working and visiting for years.
The Pucara Project is a grassroots community initiative organized by a local Spanish school and guesthouse. In response to the dire situation across Ecuador, this project is organizing to provide 250 food and hygiene kits immediately to the elderly, single-parent families, large families, and people without arable land in their community.
A traditional Quechua farming community in the Andes.
The community of Pucara is a small traditional farming community in the Andes nestled between the volcanos Imbabura and Cotacachi. Residents of the community normally travel to nearby city centers of Ibarra, Otavalo and Atuntaqui for employment. The current global pandemic has forced the total economic closure of Ecuador, which has been very difficult for many of the most vulnerable families in Pucara who have now been without income for more than a month.
100% of the funds raised for the Pucara Project will be used to purchase oil, sugar, salt, sardine or tuna cans, rice, flour, lentils, cereals, milk, toilet paper, soap, and toothpaste. The Pucara Project will buy, disinfect, package and free deliver these kits to the homes of the most vulnerable families in the community of Pucara, many of whom live day-by-day in the best of times.
