Viscose, a widely misunderstood fibre
Viscose is frequently mistaken for being either a natural or synthetic fibre - when in actuality it’s neither!
While viscose derives naturally from cellulose (or wood pulp), it has to undergo many processes until it’s wearable, which is why we refer to it as a semi-synthetic fabric. The manufacturing process starts with dissolving cellulose in a chemical solution to produce a viscose pulp. This pulp is then spun into fibres before it can be made into threads.
So if we compare this process to that of cotton, where yarns can be spun almost directly from the plant, viscose is naturally based but artificially produced.
The environmental impact of viscose
Despite being a highly versatile textile that has many favourable qualities, its lengthy manufacturing process is what gives viscose a bad reputation when it comes to its environmental impact.
However, there are many ways that sustainable businesses are able to minimize the environmental impact of viscose so that we can enjoy all the benefits this textile has to offer:
• Sourcing from fast growing, regenerative trees, in their natural environment; commonly eucalyptus, beech, pine and more recently even bamboo trees. Advancements using bamboo is a huge leap towards greener sourcing, as bamboo grows extremely fast, requires minimal water and regenerates itself without the need for re-planting.
• Responsible sourcing is crucial to prevent irreversible damage to forestation while also respecting local communities. By choosing smaller-scale production chains and sourcing timber from controlled forests, we can reduce the environmental impact of viscose.
• The chemicals used in production to separate and pretreat the cellulose also indicates how sustainable the viscose is. For greener-processing, organic NMMO technology (N-Methylmorpholine N-oxide) is used in place of harmful chemicals during the separation and pretreatment of the cellulose. By removing harmful toxins from this process, viscose is able to biodegrade without harming the environment.
When paired with Linen it’s even better! Linen is one of the earth's most sustainable fibres being 100% biodegradable and deriving directly from the flax plant that grows without the need of synthetic aid. When combined with raw, responsibly sourced viscose, this creates a luxe fabric that maintains its biodegradable qualities.

Skin benefits of viscose-linen
Used as an alternative to silk for a reason! Viscose is naturally very soft, and feels luxuriously smooth on the skin. When combined with linen’s natural structure and extra strong fibres, you get the best of both worlds - effortless style and efficiency.
Here are some key benefits...
1. Moisture-wicking and breathable: ideal for the warmer months as it helps keep you cool and dry by drawing moisture away from the skin, preventing discomfort and allowing air to circulate freely. You can wear your Blue Blend friend all through the day while still maintaining that morning freshness.
2. Viscose adds natural softness: pure linen can often feel rough or abrasive if you're prone to sensory sensitivity or skin irritations. Combined with a free-flowing design, these garments have a gentle touch to the skin when worn.
3. Maintaining structure: the linen adds body and strength to the fabric, while the viscose still maintains that silky-feel and floaty look, ensuring your garments hold their shape even after multiple washes.
This textile-blend-heaven creates a piece that is not only durable but stylish and easy to care for, perfect for those who value both fashion and comfort!

Caring for your beautifully blue pieces
When it comes to washing, a cold wash is important in order to maintain the colour and integrity of the fibres. This can be done by hand or in the machine on a cold, gentle cycle. Viscose both retains colour very well and has naturally soft qualities, so avoid the use of any fabric softeners that could interact with the fibres.
Once washed, simply hang to dry! Both linen and viscose can be prone to shrinkage when exposed to warm temperatures for too long. Tumble drying can also weaken the viscose fibres, impacting their natural softness. Caring for your Blue-Blend collection as recommended will ensure these pieces stay in tip-top condition, gracing your capsule wardrobe for many years to come!
